Perkins Dental - Vaughn E. Perkins III, D.M.D.

Services We Provide

Sedation Dentistry
Dr. Perkins is certified by the Arizona State Dental Board to perform intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM) and oral conscious sedation. Sedation dentistry is ideal for patients undergoing more complex surgical and restorative procedures and for patients with dental phobias. For patients who have not seen a dentist in several years, conscious sedation allows the patient to relax comfortably while a large amount of restorative and surgical dentistry can be performed, thus eliminating the need for multiple visits. Intravenous conscious sedation is the safest form, because the correct amount of sedative can be continually monitored for optimum effects. For those who wish not to have an IV, we offer oral (pill form) sedation to relax the patient during the procedure(s). Dr. Perkins’ medical background experience in Emergency, Intensive Care and Flight Nursing allows him to quickly recognize, react, and handle emergencies efficiently.

Comprehensive Aesthetic Diagnosis and Therapy
Our comprehensive dental examination includes a complete aesthetic evaluation when appropriate. We provide all aesthetic dentistry procedures including teeth bleaching, bonding, porcelain veneers, crowns, inlays, onlays, gingival recontouring, bone grafting, Invisalign® and adjunctive orthodontics using conventional bands and brackets.

Restorations
We provide a full range of durable and aesthetic restorations for the replacement of missing tooth structure, including porcelain, composite, and gold. Examples of these restorations are crowns, bridges, partial and complete dentures. These are the traditional solutions to decayed, broken, and lost teeth.

It is important to know the quality and training of the dental lab technician fabricating your dental restoration. This is hardly ever discussed by dentists, but is a very critical component of your new smile. Dr. Perkins uses a Certified Dental Technician (CDT), who is a childhood friend, with over 15 years of experience and specific training in aesthetics and occlusion (how the teeth come together). His dental laboratory is located in Mesa, Arizona and all materials are the highest quality and most importantly lead-free. Many dentists in the U.S. have resorted to outsourcing to labs in China, Korea and Mexico to save money without informing their patients of the origin of their restorations. There aren’t any regulatory agencies governing these non-domestic laboratories. These crowns from foreign laboratories may be safe, but how can a dentist be sure when food and toys contain harmful substances?

In addition, some dentists have bypassed laboratory costs by making “crowns in an hour”. This process is a viable solution for a very select number of cases, but to save money, are overused. These crowns often look like “permanent temporaries” and do not even come close to replicating the natural aesthetics that can be created by a highly trained CDT.

Aesthetic Dentistry
Commonly referred to as “cosmetic” dentistry in the United States. Cosmetics are pigments and lotions applied to the skin temporarily. Aesthetics deals with facial proportions made in ideal measurements to add to the overall beauty of the face through permanent dental restorations. Television makeover shows popularized “cosmetic” dentistry, but what the public may not know is that the training for "cosmetic" dentists varies enormously from no training beyond dental school to extensive training in aesthetic dentistry. In fact, there is not a currently recognized specialty in aesthetic dentistry. Any general dentist can call themselves a "cosmetic dentist" without ever performing a large aesthetic case. For your own safety, ask to see actual patient photos, not just stock photos from dental texts and literature passed off as the “cosmetic” dentist’s own work. During your visit, Dr. Perkins can show you many more cases exemplifying complex aesthetic dentistry of actual patients he has performed.

Implants
An alternative to dentures and bridges for the replacement of missing teeth. We surgically place and restore Astratech implants from the drug company, Astra Zeneca. These implants are one of the most currently researched and successful implants in the world.

Cleanings
Our office provides gentle, yet thorough dental cleanings.

Periodontics
We offer periodontal scaling and root planing (commonly referred to as "deep cleanings"), open flap debridement procedures, minor periodontal surgeries including, soft tissue and connective tissue grafting, guided tissue regeneration and crown lengthening. In addition, we perform mini sinus lifts, and bone grafting for enhanced implant placement and/or aesthetic prosthetic restoration.

Root Canals
Dr. Perkins performs root canals for teeth that are badly broken down and decayed as a way to save the tooth and restore it back to function.

Extractions
We offer extractions varying from simple to surgical, including impacted wisdom teeth removal with conscious sedation.

Oral Sleep Apnea (OSA) Appliances
Dr. Perkins has been trained in oral sleep apnea appliances. The TAP® 3 appliance is a proven treatment modality for mild to severe OSA when CPAP or BiPAP machines aren’t tolerated by the patient. You must be referred by your physician, and have a sleep study prescribed by your physician to verify the effectiveness of the device. The TAP® 3 is an adjustable appliance that uses your teeth as anchors to effectively lift your tongue off the back of the pharynx, thereby opening up the airway during sleep. Some advantages of the TAP® 3 appliance is that it is a quiet alternative to noisy CPAP and BiPAP machines and it is more portable. Please call our office for more details and to see if this might be a solution for you.
